refraction engine: australian fashion week
over the past few weeks, one of our number has been working on a ‘refraction engine’ for the australian fashion week.
in collaboration with tim richardson for fashion label friedrich gray, we worked on the brief which called for an ‘exploded glass’ sculpture as a futuristic gateway to the collection. with the collection titled ‘refraction’, the piece took a fractal geometry approach to a practical level, breaking down the images of the models and shearing them into shards of light and dark.
modeled in rhino, with the fractal effect tested using mirrored surfaces rendered out to illustrate the fragmentation of catwalk models and reflected light. once satisfied with the result, we exported the elements to laser-cutter software, fabricating and constructing the sculpture the following day. the process highlights the ease with which technology can fabricate complex results to great effect.
