aggregation and erosion: joshua chapman & lily wang
the research project initially focused on the potential of generative assembly and reduction. a technique stacking was explored and interpreted within the study of two naturally occurring patterning systems – the subtractive process of eroding rock substrate and the aggregation of components within termite mounds.
a new book from the publishers of detail magazine is out which focuses on digital planning and production technologies. it is concluded by a selection of seven projects demonstrating the potential of these techniques, including some rhino and grasshopper examples. beyond looking at some of the images we haven’t been able to delve deeply into its content as the book is currently only available in german although, an english edition is planned for 2011. check here for a sneak preview.
over the next week we will be publishing a number of projects from the urban future masters of architecture digital stream studio that we run at the university of sydney, australia.
the studio set out to explore environmentally specific yet highly articulated volumetric production through contemporary techniques of spatial conception, influenced by developments in material and environmental science, digital design + fabrication, new models of organisation, building logistics & industrialised building construction.
launched on friday, the 26th of november, archipelago will showcase the work of graduates from master of architecture, bachelor of design in architecture, bachelor of design computing and master of interaction design programs. the exhibition is held throughout the wilkinson building at the university of sydney, including the tin sheds gallery.
we finally got around to fabricating our waffle isocurve definition. using our own VB unfold surface script, we were able to re-map the twisted waffle frame cuts along with the unfolded tessellations to produce a flat sheet template ready for laser cutting. (more…)
emergent is this years title for the annual exhibition by final year master of architecture students who are showcasing their drawings, graphics and models from their year long design projects.

we stumbled across this installation by lead pencil studio the other day while trawling though one of our favourite design blogs – it’s nice that. the seattle-based studio describe their work occurring within an emerging field created by the interdisciplinary overlap of architecture and site specific art. index 2010 is the annual curated review of student work from the UTS school of architecture. the show will be held in venues along kensington st, chippendale. this year’s general opening will take place on friday 3 december 2010,with an afternoon of discussion by key industry figures, followed by the opening of the index student exhibition. click image for further info.
