carlo aiello’s genetic housing project looks at the development of rules of interaction between differential mathematical systems to create genetic architecture. Different regimes of organisation are studied and translated into architectural landguage. traditional weaving methods are used to interlock different programme. lindenmayer rules are applied to develop systems of self-organisation. the interaction of both systems generates an urban housing concept, a cohesive organism that adapts itself to programmatic, climatic, contextural, economic and social conditions.(more…)
a fascination with swarm intelligence continues to inspire work from artists to architects. for some time now, leonardo solaas has been producing some incredible processing driven visualisations which explore swarm movements. his 2006 project‘void’ is a generative application that shows the vanishing paths of many particles as they flow over the landscape of empty spaces. it pushes further the exploration of automated drawing using a swarm of autonomous agents…(more…)
in a recent experiment, researchers from japan and england have constructed a similar layout to japan’s highly efficient rail system using slime mold. the mold was presented to oak flakes arranged in a pattern similar to that of japanese cities around tokyo and was left over a 26 hour period. during this time the single celled slime mold constructed networks of nutrient channel tubes with a striking resemblance to the japanese rail system. this model based on the simple rules of the slime mold behaviour has the potential to lead to more efficient design models for constructing complex networks.
ok, so here’s the first in a number of particle defintions that we are writing in VB. we’re aiming towards a full particleEngine.gha that users can drag drop various: particle emitters; space modifiers and script characteristic components from within the grasshopper tab environment without having to get their hands dirty with code.
with the recent completion of the burj khalifa, the world’s tallest building located in dubai, what better way to celebrate than building a large temporary platform at the summit and throwing yourself off. nasr al niyadi and omar al hegelan have set a world record for the highest base jump from a building. robert hodgin (aka flight 404) a digital artist has been investigating visual systems via coding since the early 90’s. his earlier work was a broad exploration of actionscripting, however, he has shifted his focus to processing in the last few years.(more…)
another particle test from within grasshopper – this script is more directly exploring the displayPipeline and grasshopper’s potential for colour and line weights from within VB components. still some issues with clearing the displayConduit on update but a call can be made to either pause or capture every frame before disposing…
we’re now looking to further develop auto-organizational systems + network structures (via particles and chains) and will start posting our grasshopper definitions for public exploration by sometime next week.
dance punk/indie rockers hockey, hailing from portland, oregon will make their way to australia for the first time to perform at the laneway festivals and headline shows in sydney and melbourne.(more…)
this is a snapshot from our latest proposal for a house on sydney’s northern beaches. the main objective for the project was to develop an interior / exterior that drew from local inspiration…(more…)
