rhino 4.0 / grasshopper 0.60043
we’ve been testing milling patterns in grasshopper over the last few days and have uploaded an simplified VB version of our arc pattern. the definition gets interesting when paths cross, allowing for nested pockets of grooves.

rhino 4.0 / grasshopper 0.60043
as an alternative to the tried and tested waffle iso fabrication technique (ahem! boring…), we’ve slapped together a waffle isocurve definition that cuts sections through a surface via it’s normals. the defintion references any rhino surface (or brep) geometry, defines solid depth and material thickness, creates single curved surface profiles (twisted available) notches the frames and is up for an unroll command, ready to (nest + and) fabricate.
make sure you are working with flexible material… & download the sample package here.
a new kind of science (ebook)
Saturday, November 28th, 2009
as a first reference for any aspiring product-by-math designer, a new kind of science by the physicist / mathematician, stephen wolfram is available from wolframs own academic portal for online browsing or as a downloadable print package. the publication is an empirical and systematic study of computational systems (incl. biological machines) and argues that the scientific philosophy and methods appropriate for the study of simple programs are relevant to other fields of science.
the works are strongly advised to keep at hand whilst exploring systemic possibilities in processing and grasshopper.

quite a thorough collection of digitally fabricated models and prototypes have been rapidly accumulating for the last year and a half. the 499 strong flickr pool discuss and document their experiments; production techniques; experience with the fabrication industry and material explorations. great site for ideas to push your newly acquired fab machine.
anti-desertification
Friday, November 27th, 2009
magnus larsson recently presented his aa diploma year project under the tutorledge of jonas lundberg and steve hardy of ufo on ted. larssons anti-desertification proposal aims to find innovative solutions of how to combat desertification in the sahara/sahel regions of africa where sand dunes are currently moving southwards at a pace of 600 meters per year consequently ruining the landscape and making it impossible for the inhabitants of this area to make a living.
