the design project called for the re-activation of a sub-ground basement volume located directly on one of the most under-rated  & emerging new gastronomical avenues on sydney’s eastern suburbs.

from code to production (workshop)

minimal tension canopy ufo(au) workshop

we will be running a short course over the next few months at the university of sydney (australia) which will explore parametric and scripting techniques used in a real life design to construction project. the studio will run over 5 weeks of lecture and tutorial sessions and there will also be a one week construction phase to assemble the minimal tension terrace canopy designed by urban future and fabricated by ccmi installations.

sustainable pavilion update

we have completed the fabrication and construction of the hub for sustainable arts and culture (saac) and city of sydney. it will debut at this year’s peats ridge festival and will be housing the eco living area which will host presentations and films providing information on living a more ecologically friendly lifestyle. permutations – vb script

due to the complexity the SAAC educational hub components that we have been developing, the part layout and stack order of each node required a large number crunching exercise to resolve intersecting geometry.  there are 46 nodes across the pavilion with up to 7 stacked parts on each connection (7 elements produces 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5040 permutations of stack orders) meant a LOT of possible combinations per node to review & resolve clashes… an unbelievable amount of variations when dealing with the entire 46 nodes.

maroubra residence

the development application for the maroubra house has just been approved with the construction now underway. the design proposes a new level on an existing interwar cottage & includes gradient louvred facades for the east and west that have referenced the coloured hues reflected over the ocean during the sunrise and sunset. more visualised images will be uploaded within the next week.

uts open agenda – honourable mention

we recently entered the school of architecture at UTS’s annual research competition, open agenda and received an honourable mention, just missing out on one of the top three spots.  winners gain seed funding in order to develop a body of research showcased at the end of the year in a public exhibition and publication.  congratulations to the three winners rory hyde, nick sargent & mark leong and daniel fink.  you can check out their projects on the open agenda microsite.  we have included our research proposal entitled ‘vernacular differentiation’ below for those of you who are interested in having a read. veil house – installation

very excited that the laser-cut screen arrived on site today.  the veil house is completed in one day!  when the screen is installed.  fingers crossed that the 1870′s building envelope is aligned enough that the builders can install without too much packing out of the bowed walls. (more…)

veiled house screen production

the laser cut screen for the veiled house is nearing completion with the mounting of the screen to the framing currently being instructed.  we’ve been working with CCMI who have been building boats for the last 35 years, of which experience has led to some interesting conversations on material, process, detail and tolerance.     (more…)

urban future + acne jeans

the urban future laser-cut installation is currently up in the melbourne and sydney stores.  the piece is produced from thin timber ply that is tensioned in place with a laced tension cord, tighenting and folding the tiling into a double curved shape.
